KARACHI: Pakistan’s contingent will be divided in three groups for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, from September 23rd to October 8th.
The Director General of Pakistan Sports Board, Shoaib Khoso, and the Secretary General of Pakistan Olympics Association (POA), Mohammad Khalid Mahmood, held an important meeting on Thursday to discuss Pakistan’s participation in the Asian Games.
“To support the talented athletes, the contingent has been thoughtfully divided into three groups. The first group is receiving full support from the PSB, the second is partially supported by PSB, and the third group benefits from the backing of the POA. This comprehensive approach aims to provide the best possible resources and assistance to our athletes as they represent our nation on this grand stage,” the PSB said in a press release.
“A noteworthy aspect of our contingent is the significant participation of women athletes, a source of immense pride for our country. Their dedication and achievements inspire us all.
“Our athletes are no strangers to success, with many having secured medals in previous competitions, showcasing their exceptional talents. Our shooting, kabaddi and athletics teams have great potential to secure medals in the 19th Asian Games. The Pakistan Hockey team, in particular, is under the spotlight, carrying the hopes of the nation with the potential to secure a victory that would propel them toward the highly esteemed Paris Olympics. The cricket and volleyball teams also hold a high chance of clinching victory, adding to our nation's pride.”
305 members will be part of the Pakistan contingent for the Asian Games, which includes 157 men and 59 female athletes. 68 officials will also be part of the group.
Pakistan will be participating in Archery, Athletics, Bridge, Badminton, Boxing, Cricket, Climbing, E-sports, Fencing, Golf, Hockey, Kabbadi, Karate, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Squash, Swimming, Tennis, Taekwondo, Table Tennis, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling and Wushu.
Some major sports from which Pakistan will be missing are Judo, Equestrian, Baseball, Football and Gymnastics. Pakistani athletes will miss participating in these sports due to funding issues and delays in confirming entries.
